The Dragonfly
41″ × 40″Acrylic on reclaimed materialOriginal soldBy Zach Maatman
A dragonfly spreads its wings across the top of this large reclaimed panel, each wing a mass of sage-green acanthus leaves on black. Its long segmented body runs down through a pink arch, past a row of folk-art panels, into a field of dotted medallions in red, green, and gold.
Dragonflies are among the oldest flying insects on Earth and a summer fixture over Michigan’s ponds and marshes. Rich with pattern and symbol, the painting treats this ancient flier as something close to sacred.
